cord blood

when i gave birth to my 1st bb. nobody has asked me abt the cord blood? so do i assume that they donated it? or do they usually throw it away?

there are two ways to store cord blood.
1. store cord blood with a private bank. there are two in singapore at the moment: Stemcord and Cordlife. you have to pay an annual storage fees for them to store your baby's cordblood which you can use in future should your child and his/her siblings fall sick and cordblood can be used (like leukemia etc).
2. store cord blood with the public bank. currently, there is only one, run by govt of coz. The singapore cord blood bank (SCBB). its free storage. BUT anyone can use it. that is to say, if someone, not related to u at all, needs cordblood and SCBB found your child's matches that person, then they can use it. storing at SCBB is like donation. but storing with private bank, the cord blood is for ur use.

stacy, you need to indicate while PREGNANT that you wish to donate your cord blood to SCBB. then they will let you sign some forms to ensure that you do know that anyone can use the cord blood and you are of a clear mind when u sign that.

if u are not storing with private bank or SCBB, the cord blood is thrown away. just like the placenta, if you don't want, also throw away.
