Reply from LTA to Michael Low. The LTA reply addressed suggestion of zebra crossing across Punggol Field, but did not address the point re Punggol Plaza Entrance being dangerous.

We thank Mr Michael Low for his suggestions on improving safety for pedestrians near Punggol Plaza (“ ’Dangerous zones’ near shopping mall”, The New Paper, 17 Mar 2010)
As Mr Low correctly pointed out, the recent installation of the metal barriers along the centre divider was to discourage pedestrians from jaywalking across to get to the bus stops. A zebra crossing is typically placed along minor roads where traffic volume is light. While a zebra crossing could facilitate crossing, it is likely to impede the current traffic flow at Punggol Field, which has two lanes in each direction with a high traffic volume, especially during the peak hours.
In addition, it may not be safe to provide a zebra crossing at the suggested location as the existing LRT columns at the wide centre median will hinder motorists from getting a full view of pedestrians crossing at either end of the zebra crossing. This is a potentially dangerous situation as motorists may not be able to sight the pedestrians and stop in time.
We urge pedestrians to use the existing pedestrian overhead bridge that links to the Coral Edge LRT station just outside Punggol Plaza when crossing Punggol Field. They could use the stairs or the elevators, when using this bridge.
