Abacus is a straight forward solving. The child only knows +,-, X, division.

How about the spatial correspondence, 3-D figures, rotation figures, problem sums?
How about questions like what are 2 numbers make up to 10.
How about questions like 5 + how many more to make up 9.

Abacus helps the children develop powers of mental calculation. It does helps to stimulate the mind. My daughter has completed the abacus module and she uses abacus to help her check her test and exam papers faster. I get her to help me calculate the total cost of all the items when i does my grocery.

I guess different types of mathematics has it's own advantages.

in 20 yrs' time, there will be no more computers and calculators mah?

Excel can help to auto-sum. Even in working world, computers are widely used in accounting. Poor accountant has to do mental calculations.

Why dumping money only for short term? The most important as long as the brain still functioning, make full use of the left and right brain, give the child an opportunity to explore solving problems into different methods instead of using only +,-,X and division.

Nothing to do with computer or not. Just to exercise her brain at young age. BTW, her Left and Right brain very well used. My kids are healthy, does well in their studies, good behave.... I cannot ask for more.
