Web searching helps older folks stay sharp. thumbs up

It trains the brain and keep it active ! A study by researchers at University of California has shown.

Researcher Gary Small a UCLA expert on ageing said, " in reading a book, solving crossword puzzles, the visual cortex, the part of the brain that controls reading and language was activated.

In web searching, the task produce significant additional activity in separate areas of the brain which controls decision-making and complex reasoning.

Results are based on a brain scan on volunteers performing book reading and web searching.

Screening for early onset of dementia.

18% of people in their 50s in Singapore suffer from mild cognitive impairment ( MCI ). A specialist with Singapore's National Neuroscience Institute ( NNI ) found out.

He said, " The % of MCI sufferers rise from between 35% and 40% among those 60 years and above, meaning there are between 75,000 to 100,000 of them.

To heighten awareness of MCI and highlight the importance of early diagnosis, free screening for 500 to 600 people will be held over two weeks as part of the National Neuroscience Institute's week from NOVEMBER 23rd. 2008.

Help for the elderly on the way

1. Better co-ordinated Home Health and help services for the elderly with dementia.
2. A Senior Pocket Money Fund to help low income elders.
3. Setting up a National Registry of Elders from referals from the Ministry of Health, MCYS, CDC'S and Family Service Centres.

Financial Assistance, Health Screening and help-in-kind such as meals and transport vouchers could be efficiently rendered to them as well.
