aiyah  for me i teach my two kids both,think logically when the go to school they still got to learn both right and sit both for exam......start young or else later part got to spent more for tuition.....end of the day its them who suffer....no matter what language the learn,english,mandrin or malay.....as for me i'm a malay, but i speak mandrin and hokkien besides the 2 compulsory languages.

Actually children learns the most when they are 1 to 3 years old.  It's really not true that you will confuse them as they have amazing ability to absorb the information.  My SIL speaks only EL to her children and now, they are like 'bananas'.  They don't speak Mandarin unless necessary and they don't know their dialect at all, which is quite sad.

young children know how to switch languages ... so there is no cause for worry when teaching or speaking different languages.

though my girl only 9 months, we are speaking differenet language to her.. apparently seems that she can quite understand... of cos only those simple things like milk, bathe, sleep.

basically daddy speak mandarin, me english, my aunts (who visits us every weekend) speaks hokkien!!!
hey she can understand okie.. so funny!!!
