It is best to teach them both language (English & Chinese) at the same time.  When children are young, they can pickup language faster and you will be surprised.  It will be good if one of the parent speak mandarin and the other speak english.  It is also fine to teach them dialect too

I speak to my bb English and Dialect.  My hubby and I decided that it's important for him to learn his dialect.  We'll let him pick up Mandarin when he goes to play group.  Just my thoughts ...

I teach mine English only for the moment too. Also believe in not confusing him too much. But sad some people say he is a "banana boy"  Cry

Kids can  learn more than 1 language. but sad to say tt we are use to speaking only language to them.  my younger boy is 5 yrs and doesn't like me to speak to  him in mandarin, he claims tt he don't understand, even though he can speak the language to the grandmothers. and he speaks with an accent! very ang moh like!!
