to my understanding, the offering bags are being passed along the pews. It is up to you whether to give or not.

You mean you attended a church and they stare at you whether you give? Then this is not the right practise of that church. Better be careful.

actually heard from people that there are some church that practice like that..

I know ushers look to make sure that nobody steals from the offering bags when it's being passed around.  I believe that the more you give from your heart, the more you will receive.  Don't think I can take it if I am forced to give a pre-determined amount and judged when I do not.

The 10% of the salary is called tithing because the word "tithe" means"tenth" and is quite a common practice in many Christian churches.

I am not a Christian so I dont know about the bags passed down the pews but I know quite a number of my Christian friends tithe.  Well, I have nothing against them or the CCC.  Let's just say that even after many sessions with my friends, I still cannot understand the concept of tithing and I guess I may never will.

If you are interested, you can read about the concept of tithing here
http://www.hopesingapore.org.sg/documents/Tithing.pdf

I believe that giving from my heart does not equate to giving money.  I always ask my Christian friends this question: If I dont tithe but I give my heart when I do volunteer work or when I help genuinely, does that make me a lesser Christian? Will God refuse to help me just because I dont tithe? They dont have an answer for me or convince me so I guess its hard to convince me to be a Christian hee  Wink I

have been to churches when I was younger and I never equate God with money so the idea of tithing is totally ludicrious to me. I feel if I am a Christian, then God will help me no matter I am rich or poor. It should be a spiritual relationship and money should never come into the equation.

Just my $0.02 worth...
