Once during homily @ St Anne's Church, I heard that people from past (centuries ago) gave at least 10% of salary to church was because their local church community was also the governing party of that town or city and so people were in actual fact paying tithe as part of taxes so that church can manage the town/city. Nowadays, times change, we're paying taxes separately to govt and also donating to churches for their maintenance and running of programmes to help the poor - my opinion.

i been to a few churches. seems that now alot churches focus on the $$$ u give.
i've friends who stopped going to churches because of such...    Roll Eyes

heard one mentioned that he's been contributing 10% donation regularly but when once in a while he forgotten to contribute his tithing, the 'leader' actually told him that if he didn't contribute, God will not bless him. IMO it's quite rediculous and unbecoming, and also giving the religion a very bad name.  angry

a donation by "force" is no longer a donation.  it's emotional extortion.  a donation is only a donation when the donor gives somebthing out of his own free will, after he minus away what he absolutely need (not wants) and has abundance of.  if a christian has a big family to take care of (alot of dependents), then it makes no sense to contribute in monetary terms.

some think that by donating money, they feel morally right not to do any volunteer work, etc... i contribute all cash i can afford, you contribute effort.  great!  i would feel pity for these hpeople rather than have any respect for them.  then again, this is a very materialistic world.
