S'poreans start to feel the pinch of higher taxi fares

SINGAPORE : Five days into the taxi fare hike and it looks like commuters are beginning to show that they feel the pinch. ( as per survey along Orchard Road )

The general impression of most taxi-drivers........most claimed the easier way out and the best solution which don't need any survey, don't need high ranking people on top spending months exploring ways to solve taxi woes. The simple solution is to cut taxi rentals.   thumbs up

i thought of getting a car, but no extra cash to "feed" a car.

It is more comfortable and cheaper to use six cabin size limousine. All you need is just one store value card (cheaper than COE).

why there is a need to increase taxi feee.

Claimed by Taxi company

Lack of taxi at CBD and during peak hour, increase in oil price, increase in GST -> need to increase  taxi fee.

Why there is a lack of taxi at CBD and during peak hour -> need to pay $$ to go inside CDB and shortage of taxi.

Increase in oil-> unable to control by taxi companies but shouldn't garman control the prices that petrol station is charging us? price for petrol go up when there is a increase in crude oil. But do we see a drop in petrol when crube oil price go down??

Increase in GST -> can't remember the reason why garman give for increasing GST. But one thing for sure, the money is going back to garman pocket to fuel the increment for the minsters and civic servant pay.

So is there any solution for the above ?

Lack of taxi in CDB and during peak hour -> main cause is lack of taxis and taxi driver need to pay $$ to go into CBD -> reduce rental fee-> taxi driver earn more-> more pple become taxi driver coz get to earn more -> more taxis mean more competition -> taxi driver no choice need to go into CBD to get customer as there is too much taxis

In fact what the taxi companies are trying to do is of course firstly, to make sure, they make the most profits towards year end.

Second .....they claimed that eventually taxi drivers are also making money.

Thirdly......they also claimed it is for the good of passengers.

Whatever is their claim.........my personal layman opinion is,  the whole increase exercise is going to backfire. Taxi drivers are now waiting and see if it is worth driving a taxi because so far most drivers are feeling that they are making less and less as days passed. In most taxis stands around the island, taxis are linning up waiting for passengers.

Taxi drivers are now waiting to see if business will pick up as lunar new year is drawing near and hopefully continue to progress smoothly there after. If business is still poor towards, during and after the lunar new year, many taxi drivers may switch jobs, give up driving and return their vehicles to Comfort.

When that time comes than most will realized that the whole exercise is a total failure. Everyday, in and out, the first thing we heard ,read and saw, is the word PRICE INCREASE. It's worst than an epidemic . chitchat
