Are there any teachers or those good in English around who can enlighten me on this?

My child came back with her English exam paper, in it is a sentence (to rearrange) which she got wrong:

WRONG: My mother baked for me a birthday cake.

CORRECT: My mother baked a birthday cake for me.

Ok, just helping out with what i know. But a lil rusty. Knowledge i gained years ago.

Has to be in the order of Subject followed by Verb and followed by everything else eg: Adjective, etc.

So, My mother - is a Subj
baked - is a Verb
a birthday cake - is Object

for me - is just complementing the Verb (baked)
FYI, if you omit 'for me' from the 2nd sentence, it makes sense too.... My mother baked a birthday cake.

But in the case of the one made by your child, if you omit 'birthday cake', the sentence is left hanging.....My mother baked for me.....Huh? WHAT?? Technically, the first sentence is wrong then.

Yah, something like that!  Wink
