The air quality in Punggol especially in the recent weeks have been very bad. When you look outside, you can see the pollution. In fact, you can smell the pollution (something burning) without needing to look outside. Does anyone know the source of this pollution and if anything can be done about this? I am sure the PSI levels are extremely high.

 Undecided

The air quality in punggol is really bad. Besides enduring our neighbour who smoke   smoking every hour of the day, we have to
breath the unacceptable air quality at night.

Will this bad air lead to any lungs problem in long run?

YES, since the air is already so bad, and hard to breathe comfortably, can't imagine why people can still SMOKE!!!! Can't they feel harder to breathe!???.... killing the earth even faster!!!  .... also for those who still believe in burning incense papers, that's even worst!!! They are reducing the lifespan of EARTH by doubles or triples of decades every festive haiiii SIGHs!!! Can something somewhere just start educating them NO USE BURNING INCENSE PAPERS in this latter day of the law!!! Read the real scriptures of buddhism and u will know that it is no more the days of burning incense as the EARTH needs "HELP" !!!

 Shocked
The air in puugol was really bad yesterday night (9 March 2010). The burning smell is horrible. I can still smell the burnt even today after the heavy rain. The smell always occur during the night.

Does anyone know whether the burnt smell is from the construction site? Are they clearing the trees (by burning) to make way for new houses?

The poor air quality experienced recently is certainly man made. The burning smell comes only in the night. It gets worst after midnight. I agree with p21cll that it might possibly be due to the clearance of forest due to the development. I live on a high floor near punggol plaza and I can see the pollution surrounding so many blocks. I wonder if anyone else in this forum knows what is going on?

The burning smell is always in Punggol since 2001 we moved in. There was some discussion few years ago on this topic. Some residents still deny saying that 'Punggol is beautiful and quiet, there is no such burning smell.' This poor air quality is the same as residents staying in Jurong West and Boon Lay area.

Actually the air problem is not really serious on our side. It looks cloudy now because of the extensive construction work now in progress in most vacant plot of empty land in Punggol. Once construction ends, the atmosphere may not look smoky.

The main culprit is Johor. Go to Punggol Point and take a look. Facing Punggol, Johor has Power Stations, Ship-building and Rig-building yards. Ship repair and light and heavy industries everywhere. The worst is water pollution. I suppose when the oil-rig docks there for repair, they simple drain all their waste into the sea.  Angry It's not only air pollution, it's also water pollution. Residents in Punggol knows what is happening. Surely the authorities also know. What can they do ? Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
