forums are 'hyper-active'?

I guess it all depends on individual characters of the forumers.

I join many other forums. Some forums have meet-up sessions where the forumers become friends. Sometimes, I just wonder since knowing each other so well, must as well talk over the phone. Why must use the forums to 'say hi here and there'. Wasting all the posting space.

Some forums are too personalise, asking people whick block do they stay, birth-date, etc. This is public forum where the whole world can access. I think we should protect privacy and confidential for some forumers.

Some forumers take the forums as a matter of life and death to them. Meaning they take too serious with the comments by other forumers. Come on only computer mah?

Some forumers choose to login and log-off and forget about it.

So you may want to ask yourself which forum suit to your character?

I agree with you on the point its up to individual, Alaska. Taking forums as a matter of life & death is a sure no-no but as a mean to meet new friends, like some forums that have kopi sessions, is a yes-yes.
