The official guidelines:
World Health Organisation - All mothers should have access to skilled support to initiate and sustain
exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and ensure the timely introduction of adequate and safe complementary foods with
continued breastfeeding up to two years or beyond.American Academy of Pediatrics - Exclusive breastfeeding is ideal nutrition and sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months after birth....It is recommended that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mutually desired.
I'm agreeable with the above statements too
. I've made a pact with my girl to stop when she turns 3 this year, but I dunno if she really understands it or if she'll keep her promise when the time comes. Actually, she's breastfeeding very little nowadays, but I don't like the "antsy" feeling I get sometimes when I'm breastfeeding her. That's why I'd rather stop when I still have good feelings abt bfg her, then when I start scolding her. Hmm...hope you get what I mean.
