New rental HDB blocks are coming up in Tampines Street 22, Tampines Street 83, Pasir Ris Drive 6 and even in Punggol North. When the press interview a Project Manager about the presence of rental units, he said, " It is good that we have a place for the
poor people to live. My thought is " are those people living in rental units really poor
I am quite doubtful. Some may be cash rich. There may be downgraders who sold their bigger flats, keep the cash in their pockets and rent a unit to live in.
We must not forget babies borned in 1965, today are 45 years of age, a high percentage are university graduates in various professions. They may be in the middle income category, married with children probably in Junior college, Polytechnic or university.
By the time their children graduates, settled down, the couple may turned grandparents, retired, elderly, who may need just a small units to keep going. These group of rental HDB occupiers may be rich. Of course others might migrate to live a different lifestyle.
In Singapore, accordine to HDB figures, there are 42,000 rental units spread across the island. For the next three years, another 7000 units will be built.
It seems HDB is planning for more units into the future.
So are we saying Singaporeans are getting poorer and poorer as time goes by ? That more and more elderly will be moving into rental units ? If this is the case, then rental occupiers are not necessarily poor.
