Speed limit on Singapore roads are 50km/h unless otherwise signed. This includes Punggol Field, currently Punggol 21 busiest 50km/h road, the road where Econ, Prime and Punggol Plaza is.

When I take taxis, to get home, the speedometer often shows speeds of 70 to 90km/h when the taxi is along Punggol Field. Considering taxi drivers spend the most time on the roads, they are the most experienced drivers, and most aware of enforcement actions; they cannot afford to be caught speeding. This implies the taxi drivers are almost never caught for speeding, with little, perhaps no enforcement of the 50km/h limit. Otherwise, taxi drivers will quickly rack up demerit points, and lose their driving licenses. So, speed limit almost never enforced.

What's wrong with driving 80km/h on Punggol Field? If there's no accidents, no injuries, no fatalities, why not put up 80km/h signs, put up barriers to stop pedestrians crossing the road, and make it legal to drive 80km/h on Punggol Field? The stretch from Cove LRT to Coral LRT is almost 1km long. Driving at 80km/h instead of 50km/h means can get home faster.. maybe as much as 10 seconds faster, or even as much as 1 minute faster if can beat the traffic lights, instead of wait at traffic light.

The problem is there have been multiple accidents, including at least 1 fatality. What does fatality mean? It means different things to different people. It might be someone you do not know got involved in accident and is dead, and you read about it in the newspapers. It might mean a neighbour or a friend you see once in a while got killed, or it might be someone in your family. Different things to different people.

.. to be continued

Mr Raymond Lim Siang Keat:

......

The speed limit for all roads in Singapore is 50 km/h unless otherwise stated by speed limit signs.

.......

The number of speed violations increased from 158,811 in 2007 to 173,028 to 2009, which is an increase of about 9% over a three-year period. However, we should note that during this period, there was also a corresponding 8.7% increase in the motor vehicle population.
