did the name Flea market evolve because its a market where people sell their old stuff ( sometimes contains fleas in the old times?)
OK, here's what I know..... it's something the locals in France would explain to a foreigner about such markets. "Flea Market" is a literal translation of
marche aux puces in French, which is an outdoor bazaar in Paris, France - way back in the mid-1800s where they used to sell a lot of old/used furniture. The market was named after fleas that infested the upholstery of old furniture that were for sale.
I find that kinda hard to believe but that was the story I heard.
