I am not to happy with LSL speech about welcoming immigrants to Singapore.
Let me share with u some stories of ex-colleagues/friends of Indian origin who came to Singapore, some left and some are still here. But in no way they are going to make Singapore their home..they here to earn money and money is all they want.

They really are opportunist. When they were in India, they really wanted to get out and when they are in Singapore, they criticise our government policies. One particular friend came here some 8 years ago, a year later he settled down with his family. Soon within 3 years he and his family got PR and bought a 3-room HDB flat at Bedok at $165,000. 3 years down the road he sold his HDB flat at a $20,000 profit and rented a condo. He is telco engineer earning some $8,000. Wow! that is alot for this job and I bet if a Singaporean wud be on his position, it will be half of his salary. Nevetherlss, LSL mentioned that these immigrants though wud not serve NS, their sons wud be. So I probe this question to my friend some 1 year back and he surprised me that he is not going to waste 2 years of his son time doing this NS thing. He has decided to send them back to India before they turn 16. In fact, his son is studying in an Indian International School here instead of a local Primary School. Whenever, I sit down with these "friends", I feel alienated and angry cos they always bring topics that affects me a Singaporean. They criticise in front of me about the government policies and at the same time praise LSL and LKY for letting them be in Singapore. On thing for sure they are never going to make Singapore their home.

Recently, another friend of mine a Market Reseracher here for 8 years earning big bucks left for the States to work for Intel..he said that they offering him 2 times more than what he was getting here. So he pack up and left.

Another friend a Singapore Citizen for 2 years now staying in a rented Condo in the "Indian Village"
Melville Park in Simei decided that he still wants to go back to India after all so he got a PIO card (Persons of Indian Origin) from the Indian High Comm here so that he can return someday to India and anulled his SC.

LSL said in his speech that immigrants come here and create jobs for Singaporeans and sited Mustaq Ahmed founded of Mustafa who employes 1000 people. But if you probe closely how many of the 1000 are Singaporeans ?  Angry  Angry  Angry  Angry

Hi Tritonxv, well said.... many "immigrants" are those who cannot make it to the US or UK. In other words the leftovers. They are here just to gain experiences so as to be in US/UK one day. Do you think they truely like it here and will die for Singapore cos Singapore provide them a better living? Fat hope! They are using Singapore as a "stepping stone" to a better life...  mad mad mad
