What is actually " prefabrication "

In Prefab housing, building components are precast in the " construction yard " according to Building detail drawings and specification. Each unit is clearly marked with the Project Name " Punggol EC " Block numbers and other reference numbers.

They are then transported by trailers to the Construction site and stored.

Units are then lifted by the site overhead tower crane to the floor to be strutted, aligned and installed.

The following components can be prefab : Example : Gable walls, Wall facade with casement windows, complete storeroom. staircase, floor slabs, watertanks etc.

Tom, you seem to be very knowledgeable in civil construction matters. Based on your experience, when do you think the EC will be compeleted?
Brochure says Jun/Jul 2014, but by the speed of the progress, it could be much earlier than that. Just want to hear your opinion on the matter.

Based on the speed of construction of our HDB Blocks around Punggol, it normally takes two months to put up three complete floors.

The piling, foundation, footing, varies from project to project because of different ground conditions. So it is difficult to estimate completion time without drawings and specification.

For Blocks 35 and 37, most of the difficult task had more or less been completed, the remaining task is just to lift up prefab components for installation. To reach roof level, it is just a matter of another 10 months. ( raining season, contingencies not allowed for.

If my estimation is correct, Blocks 35 and 37 should reach roof level by July / August 2012. Another 3 months for painting, clearing of debris, landscape architecture, certification etc, December 2012 should be a more appropriate completion date. Progressively, Blocks 33 and 31 should catch up within probably 3 more months.

The first floor level of Block 35 had all been covered up as soon as the scaffoldings were put up as a work platform.

The second level is still in the process of lifting prefab panels, so the rooms that are taking shape is still visible. Owners of this floor should be able to see their bedroom, living room and the rest of the rooms gradually being put in place and secured.
